The harbors of Northport, Centerport and Huntington are in danger. During the past three years the beaches of Northport and Eaton’s Neck have been named among the most polluted in New York State, and several beaches have been closed either partially or wholly for the entire summer season. Northport Harbor is currently the epicenter of the Red Tide bloom for the entire Eastern seaboard. All of these harbors have been repeatedly closed to shellfishing over the last several years.
Possible sources of the pollution includes the Northport Village Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), private septic systems, and stormwater runoff. Huntington is making good progress, but Northport Village is not. Please join us to pressure Northport politicians, specifically Tom Kehoe and Henry Tobin, to accept free funding from NY State and start upgrading the STP and storm drains.
